Pranayama

Full Yogic Breath

What:
Deep Expansive Breathing (or full Yogic Breathing) is a technique in which we practice breathing deeply and expansively into our bodies.

Why:

  • May help to restore a healthier breathing pattern

  • Destress by activating the sympathetic nervous system

  • Become more present, centred and clear

  • Can help to transition from one task to the next

How:

1) Sit or lie down with a long spine

2) Bring attention to the belly and the chest (this can be made easier by resting one hand on the belly and another on the chest.

3) Breath in slowly through the nose making a gentle effort to direct your breath to your belly.

4) You should feel the belly rise with each in breath and fall (or come closer to the spine on each out breath)

5) Continue breathing in this way for between 3 - 20 minutes and notice any sensations and states of being that are present.
